Salary Statistics of Attorneys
According to the National Association for Law
Placement (NALP) 2006 Public Sector and Public
Interest Attorney Salary Report:
- The median entry-level salary for an
attorney from the class of 2005 at a civil
legal services organization was $36,000.
- The median entry-level salary for public
defenders was about $43,000
- State and local prosecuting attorneys
started around $44,000.
- The median entry-level salary was
$40,000 for attorneys in public interest
organizations, such as those dealing with
immigrant or civil rights issues.
Attorneys at every stage in their careers earn
significantly more in private practice:
- An attorney with five years of experience
at a private law firm earns at least
double what an attorney with five years
of experience earns at a public sector
organization.1
- Starting salaries for associates at big firms
in big cities is more than what even the
most experienced attorneys will ever earn
for public service work.
